Organic Gardening Helps Keep Families Healthy

Organic gardening is growing fruits and vegetables without the use of synthetic products. Organic gardening is accomplished by using animal and vegetables fertilizers along with natural pest controls. The natural pest control includes using beneficial insects or being able to spray with natural substances to control garden pests. Those chemicals that get sprayed on the plants cause harm to humans, pets, and the plants.

Organic growing not only benefits human health but also enriches the soil by adding back the natural elements. You can actually feed your plants without the use of chemical fertilizers. Mother Nature has her way of adding to the soil by using decaying plants to enhance the soil. We humans have a bad habit of raking up all the dead leaves and plant material and throwing it away; instead we need to start composting all of it by gathering it all together in an enclosed pile. This decaying organic matter can be added to by throwing in our kitchen scraps and rotting fruit. If you live in an urban area a fulling enclosed compost bin is best to use but living in the country you can get by using an open compost pile. By adding this organic material to your yard and gardens will produce better quality fruits and vegetables along with embellishing the soil.

You can purchase organic pesticides at your local garden centers, home improvement stores and over the internet. There are natural substances you can try first such as a mixture of water and diluted soap to spray on areas of infestation. Weeds can be sprayed on a very sunny day with concentrated vinegar; this method should solve the problem. A garlic spray which is a mixture of garlic, water, onion, cayenne pepper and liquid dish washing soap can also be used. You can store this mixture for about a week in the refrigerator.

If you end up with grass snakes, leave them along they like to eat garden pests. Some of the beneficial insects include green lacewings which dine on mealy bugs and spider mites; lady bugs eat aphids and leaf-hoppers; praying mantis like mosquitoes and grasshoppers and beneficial nematodes will eat only the soil dwelling insects. These are only some of the beneficial insects and their partial diets that will act as organic pesticides in your garden. Organic gardening is a wonderful way to give your family healthier food, replenish the earth’s soil and save you money on groceries. When you grow your own fruits and vegetables you will know for sure what pesticides and fertilizers are used on them; buying from the market you really do not know for sure if they are actually “organic”. We tend not to buy the organic produce because they cost more so we purchase the regular produce and hope for the best. When we buy regular apples they have a coating that cannot be washed off; you have to peel the apple to get rid of the coating. We all know the skin of an apple has a large portion of nutrients and vitamins our body needs.

It does seem strange that we have to pay more for organic produce. You would think organic farming saves the farmer money because of not purchasing the chemical products. Are we just paying extra for the word “organic”? Since the economy has been so bad we are better off starting our own organic garden for a healthier family and for saving money. Organic growing is simple to do since we will not be purchasing those chemical fertilizers or pesticides, we will be using natural organic mixtures, compost, and beneficial insects.

To grow good healthy produce the right conditions are helpful. Most garden vegetables need full sun at least six hours during the day. Plenty of organic material or compost needs to be added if your soil is on the poor side. When purchasing your plants pick the varieties that resist disease; only feed with organic matter when needed; mulch to retain moisture; water wisely and give your plants room for air flow. You should not adopt the notion that you are going on a diet. Diets are things we think of as short term, something to finish so we can go back to eating normally again. Simple Vegetarian Recipes for All Meals

Going vegetarian offers a variety of health and environmental benefits.  Not only does eating vegetarian put less strain upon the planet, it has the potential of helping individuals achieve a more balanced lifestyle and more ideal weight.  Simple vegetarian recipes can be incorporated into any meal, making prep easy and quick.  Here are some recipes anyone can prepare with a minimum of fuss.

Breakfast Burritos

Cook up some potatoes, cut them up and mix with some wilted spinach and onions.  Place in a sprouted grain tortilla.  Top with some shredded cheese and/or sour cream.

Another alternative on this theme involves cutting up some tofu and frying it with onions, tomatoes, and peppers.  Top as you like, perhaps splashing on a bit of Tabasco sauce for heat and again, wrap in a sprouted grain tortilla.

Breakfast burritos are particularly useful because you can make up a large batch, freeze some and eat them over a period of time.  They are a great meal to grab on the go and with a salad, make an excellent quick lunch as well.

Lunch beyond salads

Quiche clearly requires you to be an ova-lacto vegetarian.  If this fits your bill, quiche has the advantage of being kitchen Velcro – meaning anything sticks to it well. 

Start with your basics, a pie crust or a well oiled large muffin tin.  Mix 4 eggs to 1 cup of milk – whole milk works best.  Now, gather everything in your fridge that you think will go well together.  This is the perfect way to finish up leftover bits of this and that. 

Toss those bits into the pie shell or the muffin tins.  You can top with a bit of shredded cheese.  Pour on the milk and egg mixture leaving a bit of room at the top for expansion during cooking.  Bake until the mixture solidifies.

Sandwiches are traditional lunch food and removing the cold cuts is easy.  My favorite is avocado, arugula, and tomato on sprouted grain bread with sea salt and plenty of freshly ground pepper.  For a wrap I spread some raw almond butter on a tortilla, slice on some banana and a bit of ground flax seed.  When I include a bunch of cut vegetables and some herbal ice tea, I have a great lunch with little fuss.

Dinner time Delight

I like quick dinners.  By the time I get home after work the last thing I want to do is start some serious cooking.  To accomplish that, I spend a bit of time with my groceries over the weekend.  I prepare greens in advance, washing, drying, and tearing them so they are easy to throw in a pan or in soups or salads when I need them.  I wash and cut fruits that store well in the fridge as well.

A really quick and easy dinner is quinoa and greens.  Quinoa is the only grain that offers a complete protein.  It cooks up in 20 minutes and leftovers make a great breakfast with some milk and berries.  Once I have my quinoa cooking, I toss some greens in a sauté pan with a bit of olive oil.  I wilt the greens, toss in some garlic, a bit of red pepper and salt.  When they are cooked, I put them on my quinoa and I’m ready to eat.

During the cold months I will use my slow cooker a lot, making soups and stews that take a few minutes of prep.  Recipes are available online for a variety of such dishes.  Corn chowder or lentil soup with some fresh bread is the perfect midwinter meal and requires little by way of work.

In Rwanda, the most common sight in a kitchen is a stew pot filled with meat and vegetables simmering over a fire. This is the soup and it usually is the main course of a meal.

Gourmet Inspired Tip: For best results, you want soft silken tofu, but it can be a little difficult to manage. Do what you can to leech the water out of the pieces before cooking. As I was short on oil, I used about 1/2 cup of peanut oil in a small pan and shallow fried the pieces on both sides.

Agedashi Tofu

Ingredients

500 g silken tofu

2 cups Corn flour, enough to coat your tofu pieces

1 /4 cup dashi soup stock

1 tbs rice wine vinegar

1 tbs Japanese rice seasoning (I had Tamago Nori – egg and seaweed)

1 green onion, finely chopped

Sesame oil to taste

Soy sauce to taste

Frying oil (ie peanut or canola)

Method

- Carefully slice your tofu into pieces about 1 cm x 2 cm thick. Wrap them in a paper towel or tea towel to leech out the moisture. Leave them for about 20 minutes and change the wrap at least once.

- Coat your tofu pieces liberally in corn flour.

- Heat oil in a frying pan to about 170 degrees. When the pan is hot enough, gently lower your tofu pieces into the hot oil and deep fry for about 3-4 minutes until the sides are just starting to brown. Remove and let cool on plate.

- Mix dashi soup stock and pour over fried tofu. Top with rice seasoning and green onions and finish with sesame oil and soy sauce. Serve immediately to enjoy that hot silken goodness.

One of the easiest meals that you can make using leftovers is a nice soup or stew. By saving up leftovers through the week or even for a couple weeks, you can save up enough to make a tasty soup that everyone will enjoy. To get started, you need to start saving those leftovers. When you have leftover vegetables, add them to a container or freezer bag that you keep in the freezer, it’s a good idea to keep leftover meat as well.

To get started making the soup, you’ll want to add about a tablespoon of olive oil to a large soup pot. Allow the oil to heat up and then sauté the vegetables like onions, garlic, and celery if you have those vegetables.

Next, you’ll want to add in some water or some stock to the pot. You’ll need about two cups of the liquid. Now it’s time to add the meat to the pot and start increasing the heat until you have the liquid boiling in the pot. Once you have the liquid at a nice boil, you can add some tomatoes and other vegetables. Now you can allow the pot to simmer for awhile. If you want, add in some basic seasonings to the soup, such as oregano, basil, bay leaf, white pepper, black pepper, salt, or parsley. A little chili powder can add a bit of kick to the soup if you like it spicy.

Really Simple Vegetarian Recipes

Breakfast

2 beaten eggs

Steam the brussel sprouts right until tender, rise and set aside. Separately steam the sprouts and set aside. Warmth oil in a wok or sizeable skillet. Include in the garlic and when it starts to brown include in all the onions. Stir-fry right until the onion is clear in color. Lower the warmth and blend in the brussel sprouts, sprouts, and cashews. Cook dinner for about a minute to combine.

Carrot and Pepper Soup

a pair of tablespoons olive oil
a whole-2 red bell peppers chopped
a pair of cups diced yellow or white onion
one pound carrots
six cups water or vegetable stock
three tablespoons chopped parsley
three tablespoons rice

Warm the oil in a soup pot; add in the peppers, onion, carrots, rice, and salt to taste. Prepare dinner over medium warmth with a cover for about 10 minutes. Add the parsley and water or stock and bring the combination to a boil. Decrease the warm and simmer until eventually the rice is cooked completely. This will take about 25 minutes. Cool for short time and then puree all but two cups of the soup. Once pureed combine it back with the reserved two cups and serve with salt and pepper to style.

Supper

Sauted Asparagus

one pound asparagus
a whole clove of garlic minced
a couple of tablespoons olive oil
one small-scale bunch of inexperienced onion chopped
one teaspoon lemon zest
one tablespoon fresh chopped parsley

Slice the asparagus into pieces, leaving the tips about 3 inches extended. High temperature the oil in a significant pan. Include in the asparagus with some salt to taste. Sauté until finally almost tender. All in the green onion, garlic, lemon, and parsley, cook dinner for 1 minute additional.

Baked Mustard Honey Tofu

one pound firm tofu
four tablespoons honey
one tablespoon molasses
1 ½ tablespoon peanut oil
a couple of teaspoons soy sauce
four tablespoons mustard
2 ½ teaspoons curry powder

Lower the tofu into cubes and set out on towel to drain. Combine the rest of the elements as a marinade. Whisk with each other all the substances until they are fully combined. Put the tofu into a tiny baking dish and pour the marinade above the top. Let it sit overnight. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 for about 20 minutes. Eating healthily is a choice that is important to all individuals but there are people who would ignore this choice for fear of missing out on life’s good offers. But little did they know that life’s good offers comes in small packages.

That small package comes in the form of our health. If our health deteriorates because of unhealthy eating, then how can one go on living as though nothing’s wrong? But if this small package is well taken care of, then life’s good offer can go a long long way!

Here are some tips on how to promote healthy eating within your family and out:

1. Live by example.

As mentioned earlier, you can’t expect your neighbors to eat healthily first before you would. Instead, let it start from you. You don’t have to make a big announcement or something like that, but inviting over a neighbor with rich and tasty vegan food might spark an interest. Or knock on your neighbor’s door and give a plate of food that is rich in anti-oxidant, fiber and minerals.

2. Don’t criticize others.

One of the pitfalls of healthy eating is we’ll start criticizing other people’s way of eating. NEVER do such a thing. It will turn people away instead of igniting their curiosity. Instead, focus on correcting your own eating habits and diet and try, as much as you can, to never regress to eating what you used to eat. Criticizing others and then regressing will only make people laugh at you.

3. Learn, Explain and Educate.

Once you start on healthy eating, it’s only but natural for people to ask “why”. This will then be your opportunity to explain and educate. However, how will you explain it to others if you yourself are not learned? Therefore, try as much as you can to research and learn instead of just going along with the “fad”.

4. Not dieting.

Lastly, healthy eating is not the same as how we understood dieting. Healthy eating is not about staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the food that you love. Instead, it’s about having more energy, feeling great, and staying healthy. People who are dieting are mostly anorexic because they fail to understand what healthy eating means. And since they deprive themselves of the food that they love, they would resort to vomiting when they’ve eaten the “forbidden” food.

Once you’re able to correct your mindset about healthy eating, promoting it will be easy and hassle free because people will see it in you and through you. Therefore, Eat Healthy, Be Healty!

There is no need to have a weight loss diet. It is your body, your taste buds, your preference, your life; so you decide what you want to eat, what to put into your mouth, and that is your pleasure and your responsibility too. You are the one that have control about what your food will be and how much you are going to have.

Knowing what food you need:

Won’t everyone’s life be easier if everyone knows what he or she wants or needs? No matter it is the relationship, the job choice, where to live, where to go for the vacation, which school to attend or which age to retire? If everyone knows what they really need to do, everyone’s life would be happier and simpler.

On the table in front of you. You see french fries, chocolate cake, chicken salad, hamburgers, oranges, and steak. What you are going to do with those food? Do you need to eat them all? No, not really. You will know if you ate all of those, you are going to get stomach upset if you ate them all and also gain some unneeded calories too. So, you know what you need and also what you want when you are seeing the food. So, the deciding fact to your successful or failing weight loss plan is can you be powerful enough on self discipline and not let your wanting for food over rule your need for food.

Food lust or food need:

When you went to movies, you snacked on some popcorn and sipped a cup of smoothie because everyone was getting some. We know about peer pressure on decision making, but if you succumb to it, you know it is not going to do anything good on maintaining a good and fit body. So, you know what your body doesn’t need that. Therefore, if you have strong will power and you truly want to maintain a good weight, you know what you should do and what you should not do. You don’t need to deny yourself if you truly need those snack, but you really don’t need all of them. You can have a few bites, taste the taste, and share them with your companies. You can have what you really desire, but not all at once.

Food thrifty and food need:

When you cleaned the dinning table, you saw the leftover food of your kids’ still on the plates. Should you eat them all because if you don’t, the food will be wasted? When the situation occurs, you need to listen to what your body needs and your internal cues; you don’t make your decision on eating food based on thrifty causes. If you are full, then you are done with eating. No matter how many leftover you see on the table; eating them will not do your body good if you are already full.

Food as investment to your body:
When you go to the gas station, you won’t put diesel into your car, and you might have certain consideration about what fuel you would like your car to have. You would not put random ingredient into your fuel tank, because you know what you need to invest into your car for its long term benefit and it safety concern. Same things apply when you consider food as the investment to your body and it long term health. What will be good for your body in the long run? Not meals to McDonald’s every night, not steak and cookies every day, not French fries or any deep fried food for every eating occasion. It must be something good and something healthy like:

1. Fruit and vegetables are 100 percent natural, fiber rich and super nutrients loaded.

2. Whole food with lesser processed the better: Use whole wheat flour instead of white bleached flour, use brown rice instead of refined rice rice, make your own cereal instead of premade box cereal, make your own jam instead of the jars on the counter.

3. The lesser ingredients, the better the purer: When you go on the grocery shopping, look at the ingredient fact to see what in the package that you will be buying. If it contains a lot of names that you don’t even know, then you better not buying it; the chance is those are either chemicals or artificial flavor or preservatives.

4. Used good oil instead of bad oil: Use unsaturated oil whenever you can, and have good omega-3 fish oil or flaxseed oil for your heart health. The repeated used deep fried oil is cancer inducing element which is very bad for any body let alone it only contains fat.

5. The sweet devil: I love chocolate, I bet you do. Should I eat them? Of course I should and you should too. Just remember don’t eat a lot at once time. Taste them, don’t just eat them. If you can’t stop thinking about it, you probably want it, so you can have a small portion of it.

Final words: Don’t jump and eat food at your first impulse. Spend some time seriously asking yourself, “Do I really need this?” The answer maybe a yes, or maybe a no. Just remember think food as the investment, whenever you see an available food, make a decision, consciously and with forethought, and you will be on the right track on the train of healthy eating without any diet and without much regret or guilty.

Slim Down With A Low Calorie Diet Meal Plan

Having a healthy body should be the priority in today’s world where many of them are trying to catch up with a slim or size zero trends. Having a healthy body helps you have a fresh and stress free mind and soul. These days there is a lot of workload wherever we go so we need a strong and healthy body to cope up with strenuous physical and mental exercises. It does not mean that you over eat and input large amount of calories. One needs to have a balanced diet for a fit and fine body. For a 1500 calorie diet a specific meal is designed for breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner on a daily basis. These are many sample menus designed for a 1500 calorie diet.

One can go for a substitute with the same calorific value. For day one the specified breakfast includes low fat double egg cheese omelet which gives 320 calories, one large slice melon which provides 47 calories and 2 slices of toast with a thin layer of butter which gives about 200 calories. For lunch the suggested meal is a spicy salad made with turkey which gives 304 calories.

For day one must consume a honey nut bar which is a health bar of 180 calories or Muesli which provides the same amount of calories for snacks. The menu for dinner includes baked potato with cottage cheese or baked beans as per choice which adds another 350 calories on an average. Large quantities of vegetables and fruits in the form of salad must be consumed which adds another 100 calories. The total calories for the course for day one come to 1501 calories.

The breakfast for day two courses begins with skimmed milk worth 350 calories and unsweetened fruit juice which gives 60 calories. Instead of lunch one must replace it with a snack which includes a banana worth 107 calories and another snack of 120 calories which can be Strawberry Yogurt. The dinner should be consumed a bit early. The best choice would be a Chow Mein with Beef as the main ingredient which adds an additional 850 calories. Later in the night have a Kiwi fruit which provides 30 calories and brings the total calorie consumption to 1517 calories.
